Skeptics claim that aromatherapy is a ‘modern fad,’ and scoff at the thought of using herbal remedies to cure illnesses ranging from acne to severe depression. However, nearly every culture throughout history has used incense to promote mental and physical health.
Prehistoric man realized that certain woods, when burned, released pleasant or evocative scents. They used these special woods to focus their minds during tribal ceremonies, and to calm and cure injured tribesmen. Ceremonial incense burners have been found in archaeological ruins, and ancient historical documents detail how incense and herbal oils were used to treat the sick and heal injuries. The Athar-vaveda and Rigveda, in particular, tell how early Hindu priests became renowned for their herbalistic skills, and creatively used incense to become famous Ayurvedic healers.
The Japanese invented the incense cones used today, and presented them at the World’s Fair in the late 1800's. Since then, aromatherapy has enjoyed a new, growing popularity.
